About this reference

This site exists to answer one shape of question: how much does a thing weigh. It is run by the people who make AI Weight Scale Estimator, an Android app that puts a number on an object from a single photograph.

Where the numbers come from

Some of them we weighed ourselves. Those pages say so, and the figure came off a calibrated scale in our own test set rather than from another website. The rest are reference values, and they are given as a range rather than a single number, because a banana is not a fixed quantity.

What an estimate is not

There is no scale in a phone and no sensor behind the glass. A weight worked out from a picture is an inference from size, shape, colour and material. It is a reference figure. Anything that has to hold up legally or commercially belongs on a certified scale.
