How much does a cucumber weigh?

A medium salad cucumber, weighed whole on our bench, came to 222 grams. That is the ordinary loose cucumber sold by the piece; the pickling and greenhouse kinds are different vegetables and weigh accordingly.

Cucumbers are roughly 95 percent water, more than almost anything else in a produce aisle, which is why one left a week in the fridge visibly shrinks and lightens well before it looks spoiled. Weigh it the day you buy it and the number will not hold for long. The other two kinds sit outside the range here. A stubby pickling cucumber runs 60 to 100 grams, and a long greenhouse cucumber sold shrink-wrapped runs 300 to 400. The wrap on the long one is not padding — the thin skin loses moisture fast without it.
