How much does a tomato weigh?

A tomato sold loose by the pound weighs about 110 grams. The figure holds for the ordinary round tomato most people picture; the word covers several other things that weigh nothing like it.

That 110 grams comes from our own bench, and it was not weighed as a single fruit. Two medium tomatoes together came to 221 grams; we split the total in half rather than trust a scale reading on one tomato at a time, where the soft, uneven base makes a single-item reading easy to knock off centre. The range above covers round tomatoes only, because that is what the question usually means. The other shapes sit outside it: a cherry tomato is about 17 grams, and a plum tomato — Roma, San Marzano — runs 60 to 90 grams despite looking bigger than it weighs. If a recipe says one tomato and the box says plum, expect a little over half what a round one would give you.
