A grapefruit and a banana fill about the same space in a hand, which makes them a useful pair to compare: our bench put a whole grapefruit at 468 grams, next to a banana's 118. Same handful, four times the weight.
The gap is not mostly fruit. A grapefruit's rind and pith run thick — often a fifth of the total weight before you reach anything edible — and the flesh underneath is dense with juice rather than the soft, airy structure of a banana. Size alone is a poor guide here: two objects that look like the same handful can weigh several times apart, which is exactly the kind of case where judging weight by eye goes wrong.
