How much does an AA battery weigh?

A standard alkaline AA battery — the kind sold by the pack in every shop — weighs about 23 grams. A lithium AA of the same size comes in around 15 grams, and a rechargeable NiMH AA runs closer to 28 grams. All three are the same size cell; the weight difference comes entirely from what is packed inside the can.

The gap tracks what is inside the cell, not the brand on it. A lithium cell is the lightest because the materials packed into it are lighter than the zinc paste that fills an alkaline one. A rechargeable goes the other way: it is built to survive hundreds of charges rather than one discharge, and the materials that make that possible are heavier. So the same shaped cell can differ by half its own weight depending on which of the three you pick up.
