How much does a Lego brick weigh?

Our bench put a standard Lego 2×4 brick — eight studs, full height, the size most people picture at the words "Lego brick" — at 11.8 grams. That number belongs to this one piece size, not to the brand as a whole. Smaller pieces are lighter in rough proportion to how much plastic they hold: a 1×1 brick from the same line is a small fraction of that weight, and thin plates weigh less again.

Every standard Lego element is molded from the same ABS plastic at the same wall thickness, so weight scales closely with the footprint and height of the piece: a 2×4 brick covers eight studs at full height, a 1×2 plate covers two studs at a third of the height, and so on. Following that ratio down puts a 1×1 brick at roughly 1.5 grams — a rough rule of thumb, not a measurement — which is why a handful of small pieces can feel surprisingly light next to a single large brick on a scale.
