How much does a lighter weigh?

A standard plastic disposable lighter weighs about 21 grams full. That is the one most people mean, and it is the one in a pocket or a kitchen drawer. A refillable metal lighter is a different object entirely — see below.

Fuel is a smaller share of the weight than it looks: a standard disposable holds only about seven grams of butane, so a spent one still weighs two thirds of a full one. You cannot judge how much is left by hand, which is why the fuel window exists. Refillable metal lighters sit far above the range on this page. The one on our bench weighed 77.6 grams full — the metal body carries almost all of that, which is why an empty one still feels heavy.
