How much does an umbrella weigh?

A full-size stick umbrella — the kind with a straight shaft that stays one length, not a compact one that telescopes down into a bag — weighs 651 grams closed, on our bench. The longer shaft and wider canopy that make it a stick umbrella rather than a folding one are also what put it well above a pocket-size model.

A folding pocket umbrella is really a different, lighter object: the telescoping shaft and smaller canopy that let it collapse to hand size also cut its weight to roughly 150 to 300 grams, less than half the range above.
